Vanderbilt University says it hasn’t accepted or rejected a White House compact on higher education but is providing feedback as part of an “ongoing dialogue.”

The draft compact, sent to nine universities, urges schools to drop demographic factors in admissions and adopt federal definitions of gender in exchange for preferential funding.

Chancellor Daniel Diermeier reaffirmed the school’s commitment to “institutional neutrality,” while student groups remain divided.

Vanderbilt is one of only two universities that haven’t rejected the compact outright.

A nationwide Amazon Web Services outage on Monday disrupted Canvas, the online learning hub used by University of Tennessee students, preventing access to class materials, assignments, and communication with professors.

Students at UT Knoxville and other campuses reported widespread frustration as coursework was delayed and deadlines loomed.

Some lost completed work, while others requested extensions amid limited official guidance.

The outage also affected other apps, such as Snapchat and Grubhub, before services began returning by late afternoon.

Tennessee is seeing a surge in residents living past 100, with about 1,200 centenarians recorded in the 2020 Census—a 50% jump nationwide from 2010.

The spike reflects broader longevity trends and highlights growing pressure on the state’s caregiving system.

From 2020 to 2024, the population over age 65 in Tennessee rose 12.5%, while a 2022 report flagged a critical shortage of in-home caregivers.

In response, the state launched an Office of Healthy Aging last year to tackle the needs of its aging population.
