Article Icon 1 Bill to Block Migrant Students Advances

A bill allowing school districts to deny enrollment to illegal migrant students passed the House K-12 Subcommittee on Tuesday.

Introduced by Republican House Majority Leader William Lamberth, it allows local education agencies to require proof of citizenship for enrollment.

Protesters, including children, with signs, rallied at the state capitol. Opponents called it an “assault on children’s rights,” emphasizing that education should be universal, regardless of immigration status.

The bill now goes before the full House Education Committee.

Article Icon 1 Owner Says His Dog Shot Him

A Memphis man was shot in the leg early Monday morning and said his 1-year-old pit bull, Oreo, pulled the trigger.

According to the police report, Jerald Kirkwood was in bed with a female friend around 4 a.m. when Oreo jumped on the bed, got his paw caught in the trigger guard, and discharged the gun.

Kirkwood sustained a grazing wound to his left thigh and was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. His female friend reportedly left with the gun before paramedics arrived.

Authorities believe that the incident was an accidental injury, and the victim is expected to make a full recovery.

Article Icon 1 Priscilla Presley Honored by State

Priscilla Presley received Tennessee’s highest civilian honor, the Colonel Aide de Camp award, for her efforts to preserve the state’s musical legacy.

Governor Bill Lee and members of the General Assembly presented Presley with the award for her work with the Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum, nearly 65 years after her ex-husband Elvis Presley received the same honor.

Presley used the opportunity to speak about the museum, urging lawmakers to preserve the city’s musical legacy for future generations.

She closed her address with the same words Elvis used in 1961: “I am very proud to be here from the state of Tennessee. I will always call this my home. I hope I can live up to this honor; I will try my very best. God bless you all.”
