Educators Seek TCAP Delay After Storm

Tennessee education advocates are urging the state to delay or loosen this year’s TCAP testing schedule after the January ice storm forced widespread school closures.

Professional Educators of Tennessee sent a letter to Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds, saying uneven disruptions left students with vastly different amounts of lost instruction time.

Advocates are asking for more flexibility so districts can choose testing dates that fit their recovery timelines.

TCAP scores factor heavily into student performance and teacher evaluations, raising concerns about fairness if testing moves forward as planned.

Gallatin Farm Fights TVA Power Plan

A Gallatin family is pushing back against a Tennessee Valley Authority proposal to run new power lines through a historic farm that’s been in the same family since 1787.

The Gregory family says the project would cut through about eight acres, damaging trees, a creek, and an educational farm school that serves hundreds of local students.

According to the TVA, the route was selected to meet Gallatin’s growing power needs and minimize overall impacts, and the concerns were not raised during earlier public comment periods.

The family has launched a petition, urging TVA to find an alternate route to preserve the land’s history and future.

Historic Oak Succumbs to Ice Storm

A 100-year-old oak tree at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens in Nashville will be removed after an ice storm caused a fatal crack, arborists determined this week.

The tree, which stands near the mansion at the historic estate, initially appeared to survive the storm before damage was discovered days later.

Cheekwood officials called the loss significant but said a new tree will be planted in its place.

The botanical garden, home to more than 2,100 trees, was among many Middle Tennessee sites hit hard by January weather.
