Federal immigration officials and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) conducted a joint enforcement operation in South Nashville early Sunday, making approximately 150 traffic stops and detaining dozens of individuals.

The operation focused on areas identified by THP as having high traffic incidents and suspected gang activity.

Between 40 and 100 people were taken to an ICE field office, with some later transported to a detention facility in Louisiana.

The Nashville mayor’s office criticized the federal action, saying it stokes fear in immigrant communities and pledged to seek information on those detained.

President Trump has nominated Whitney Hermandorfer, a top attorney in Tennessee’s Attorney General’s office, to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals—his first judicial pick since returning to the White House.

Hermandorfer has led major litigation for the state, including defending its abortion laws and challenging federal education guidance on LGBTQ issues.

Her nomination fills a seat vacated by Judge Jane Branstetter Stranch, an Obama appointee.

A former clerk for three current Supreme Court justices, Hermandorfer now awaits confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Tennessee tops the list as the best state in the U.S. for saving money, according to a 2025 analysis by Bankrate.

The ranking credits the state’s low cost of living, absence of state income tax, and relatively favorable local tax structure.

While Southern states dominated the top of the list due to similar financial advantages, the report also notes broader regional trends, such as lower average incomes and higher poverty rates across the South.

Still, Tennessee stands out as a state where residents have a strong shot at setting aside money despite trends in economic uncertainty.
