Article Icon 1Flood Advisory Extended Near Memphis

flood advisory remains in effect for the Mississippi River at Memphis as rising water levels pose risks to nearby areas.

The National Weather Service warns of potential impacts on roads and low-lying communities through Sunday, March 2. The river is expected to crest at 28.7 feet on Tuesday, nearing the action stage of 28 feet.

At 29 feet, some evacuation routes could be cut off, and water could reach levees near Sulcer Road west of South Lake.

Although the forecast calls for mostly calm weather this week, Wednesday will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Residents are warned to stay vigilant for sudden weather changes that could worsen flood risks.

Article Icon 1Teachers Encouraged to Say ‘Gulf of America’

Tennessee senators are backing a resolution encouraging educators to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” following an executive order signed by President Trump on his first day in office.

Filed by Sen. Bo Watson (R-Hixson), the resolution also promotes using “Mount McKinley” instead of “Mount Denali” in Alaska, though the wording doesn’t require using the terms.

“We most heartily agree with President Trump that ‘the naming of our national treasures … should honor the contribution of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past,'” the resolution said. Read the resolution here

The bill has gained 19 prime cosponsors, including Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, with enough support to pass in the 33-member Senate.
