A newly proposed bill in the Tennessee General Assembly seeks to impose a $5 million penalty for providing abortion-inducing pharmaceuticals to residents of the state.

Filed by Republican Rep. Gino Bulso, the legislation would hold individuals “strictly liable” for damages if they mail or deliver abortion-inducing drugs into Tennessee with the intent of facilitating a chemical abortion resulting in the death of an unborn child. The bill includes a five-year statute of limitations for such claims.

The proposed legislation specifically targets drugs such as mifepristone, misoprostol, and mifeprex (RU-486) when distributed or possessed to terminate a pregnancy. If passed, the law would take effect on July 1, 2025.
