Article Icon 1Memphis Schools Takeover Becomes Law

Gov. Bill Lee signed legislation Friday granting a nine-member appointed board sweeping authority over Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), Tennessee’s largest district, serving more than 100,000 students.

The oversight board will control the district’s $1.7 billion budget and set direction for leadership and operations, while working alongside the existing elected school board. The Republican supermajority passed the bill on April 22, exactly one month before Lee signed it into law.

The takeover strips the locally elected board of meaningful authority over the district’s biggest decisions, transferring power to state-appointed officials. Shelby County—a Democratic stronghold—will have its public schools governed by a board appointed entirely by Republican state leaders.

Lee named five Memphians yesterday for the new board, including former MSCS Superintendent Dorsey Hopson.

Article Icon 1CVS Sues Over New Pharmacy Law

Gov. Bill Lee signed the FAIR Rx Act into law Friday, barring pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from also owning retail pharmacies in Tennessee.

CVS Health—the nation’s largest pharmacy chain and a major PBM operator—filed a federal lawsuit within hours of the signing, challenging the law’s constitutionality. The company argues the law could force it to divest or close its Tennessee pharmacy locations.

The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Bobby Harshbarger (R-Kingsport) and state Rep. Rick Scarbrough (R-Oak Ridge), targeting the vertical integration of PBMs and retail pharmacies. Supporters say the law shields independent pharmacies from unfair competition and could lower out-of-pocket drug costs for patients.

CVS operates both a pharmacy benefits division and hundreds of retail locations across Tennessee, making it the law’s most direct target among major national chains.

Tennessee softball swept Georgia in the Knoxville Super Regional, clinching the series with a 2-1 win on Friday to punch a return trip to the Women’s College World Series.

Junior pitcher Sage Mardjetko was the story of the day. Tennessee coach Karen Weekly described her performance as “absolutely incredible” after she limited Georgia to a single run. Sophia Knight, the Lady Vols’ leadoff hitter, provided the decisive offensive punch to seal the sweep.

Tennessee is heading to their 10th College World Series at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, where the national championship is decided each June. Tennessee will play the winner of Texas vs. Arizona State in their WCWS opener.
