Article Icon 1Judges Take Tennessee Redistricting Case

A state three-judge panel heard arguments Thursday in Nashville over whether Tennessee’s Republican-controlled legislature exceeded its authority when it redrew congressional maps that critics say dilute black voting power in Memphis.

The new districts, drawn during a May special session, split Memphis’ historically majority-black congressional district across multiple seats. The NAACP argues the General Assembly went beyond its scope by permanently repealing Tennessee’s ban on mid-decade redistricting rather than merely suspending it.

The panel—Chancellors Anne Martin and Tony Childress, plus Judge James Gass—faces a tight timeline before November’s elections. Martin appeared sympathetic to the plaintiffs, while Childress pressed hard on questions of legal standing. Gass offered few signals.

Three additional federal lawsuits challenging the maps have been reassigned to a single federal judge. A ruling overturning the maps—from either court—could reshape every Tennessee congressional race this fall.

Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch died Thursday at 41 following a sudden, severe illness that had forced him out of the Charlotte race weekend.

NASCAR statement described Busch as “a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation.” The sport’s all-time wins leader across its top three series, Busch claimed Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019.

For Tennessee fans, Busch was a beloved fixture at Bristol Motor Speedway, where his fierce driving style and passionate “Rowdy Nation” fan base lit up race weekends year after year. Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha, and their two children.

The Tennessee Titans are putting their money where the community needs it most—awarding $500,000 in grants to Nashville-area nonprofits that are fighting the city’s affordable housing crisis.

The funding comes through the team’s Home Field Advantage Catalyst Fund, which has already distributed more than $800,000 to 14 housing nonprofits in its first cycle. This latest round targets organizations providing everything from emergency shelter to rental assistance and affordable housing development.

One past recipient, The Village at Glencliff, helps people experiencing homelessness recover after hospital stays. Its director says it’s the kind of place that can be the difference between a second chance and dying on the street. “They do care. They’re into the community,” said one resident whose life was changed by the support.

Applications for this grant cycle close Sunday. The Titans have committed more than $5 million total to housing support across Middle Tennessee.
