This pivotal transaction established the physical site of the city, which later served as the capital of Tennessee from 1818 to 1826.

Flood Watches, Severe Storms Soak the State

Repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms moved across Tennessee this weekend, placing much of the state under flood watches as forecasters warned of flash flooding and damaging winds.

In Middle Tennessee, the main severe weather threat is damaging winds and some areas may also receive 2 to 5 inches of rain. A Flood Watch is in effect for the region through 6 p.m. Sunday. Local meteorologists shared safety tips, calling flooding one of the most dangerous weather hazards in the country.

East Tennessee also remained under a Flood Watch through Sunday, with local forecasters estimating 2 to 4 inches of rain and localized flooding. The flood watch remains in effect for the entire area through Sunday afternoon.

Storms in the Chattanooga area threatened damaging wind gusts and a Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening as multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms remain possible across the Tennessee Valley. Meanwhile Memphis and the Mid-South faced a Level 2 severe storm risk over the weekend with heavy downpours. Today’s forecast for the area is not as hot with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to linger into Monday before drier conditions return.

Parasitic Stomach Illness Confirmed in Tennessee

Health officials have confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection causing severe stomach illness, have reached Tennessee this summer as reports climb across the country.

The illness, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, spreads through food or water contaminated with feces. As of July 10, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 11 to 30 cases of the illness in Tennessee since May 1. There are currently 843 cases total that have been reported nationwide.

In West Tennessee, there have been confirmed cases in Madison County, while a nationwide map shows Michigan, New York, and Ohio have been hit the hardest, with no single food source identified.

The illness is most commonly linked to fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, and certain fruits. Symptoms often begin about a week after exposure and can include severe watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, chills, and loss of appetite.

Infectious disease expert Dr. William Schaffner with Vanderbilt University Medical Center emphasizes that this issue shouldn’t paralyze people as long as they wash their hands and clean their produce. According to the CDC, most people who have healthy immune systems will recover without treatment, but the illness can last for several weeks or even longer.

Tennessee Trooper Injured After Traffic Stop

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was injured Friday afternoon when a driver fled a traffic stop on Highway 412 in Crockett County, dragging the trooper along the roadway, officials said.

The incident ended when the vehicle crashed into the median near Old Mound Road. Bystanders called 911, and more than 15 officers from multiple agencies responded within minutes.

Authorities identified the driver as 30-year-old Calvino Bogan, who faces charges including aggravated assault against a first responder and evading arrest, with bond set at $200,000.

The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover. Sheriff Troy Klyce condemned the incident, and THP is leading the investigation.
