Article Icon 1Judge Frees Egyptian Asylum Seeker

A federal judge ordered the release of a Christian asylum seeker from Egypt whom ICE detained in Nashville, ruling the government unlawfully jailed him without a required bond hearing.

U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger found the government never formally ended the man’s earlier parole before re-detaining him in September.

Parole is a form of release that lets certain asylum seekers stay out of detention while their cases move forward, and only ICE, not an immigration judge, can grant it.

Federal judges in other cities have issued similar rulings, including one in Charlotte in December involving another Egyptian asylum seeker detained at a routine ICE check-in.

Article Icon 1Combine Explodes in Maury County Field

A combine caught fire and exploded in a corn field on Mt. Joy Road near Mt. Pleasant last week, according to the Maury County Fire Department.

About 40% of the machine was already burning when crews arrived, and a large explosion soon “completely consumed the combine,” followed by smaller blasts as its tires burst.

Firefighters put out the combine and corn field fires and spent more than an hour overhauling the wreckage, and no one was hurt.

Most combine fires start in the engine area, where dry crop residue can touch hot parts, and extension experts urge farmers to clean their machines daily during harvest.

Article Icon 1Sevierville Tops TN Mispronunciations

Sevierville is Tennessee’s most mispronounced word this year, according to an analysis of Google searches for pronunciation help from January through Oct. 20.

Nationally, Worcestershire sauce topped the list with more than 321,000 searches.

Last year’s version of the study found Tennesseans most often looked up how to say “gyro”, which is pronounced YEE-roh.

For the record, locals say Sevierville as “suh-VEER-vil,” and the city takes its name from John Sevier, Tennessee’s first governor.
