Article Icon 1Strong Early Turnout before Tuesday’s Vote

More than 1.28 million Tennesseans voted early or by mail ahead of Tuesday’s election, about 27% of the state’s 4.78 million registered voters.

That’s well ahead of the 2022 midterm pace but behind 2018. That year was the last time Tennessee had an open governor’s race, as it does now.

Voters will choose a new governor, a U.S. senator, and members of Congress. They’ll also decide three constitutional amendments, including limits on bail, a ban on a state property tax, and expanded rights for crime victims.

Experts told WSMV the early numbers are a signal, not a forecast.

Article Icon 1Titans Push Bengals to Overtime

Three days after trading All-Pro Jeffery Simmons, the heavy-underdog Titans built a 13-point lead at Cincinnati before falling 43-36 in overtime Sunday.

Cam Ward threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns in his first 300-yard game, and safety Amani Hooker intercepted Joe Burrow three times.

Ward’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Wan’Dale Robinson put Tennessee up 36-29 with 3:46 left, but Burrow answered with a tying score to Tee Higgins with 1:17 to go.

Burrow, who threw for 462 yards and five touchdowns, ran in the winner in overtime. The Titans fell to 1-7, and Cincinnati improved to 5-2.

Article Icon 1Memphis Boy Gives Up Birthday Gifts

A Memphis 8-year-old spent his birthday handing out warm meals and bottled water to people experiencing homelessness downtown instead of opening presents.

Kentintton McNeil, a Downtown Elementary student, served chicken tacos to nearly three dozen people, up from seven at his first giveaway last year. “I want them to feel joyful about their food, and I want them to have a great night today,” he said.

His mother, Alexis McNeil, said he asked to postpone his birthday trip so he could keep it going. He wanted “to bless other people because God has blessed him,” she said.

Family, his principal, and supporters joined in, then sang Happy Birthday to close the night.
