Article Icon 1ICE Doubles Back on Lebanon Mega Center

Federal officials are considering building a massive immigration detention facility in Lebanon that could hold up to 16,000 detainees, potentially making it the nation’s largest.

ICE confirmed it is conducting due diligence on a site along Highway 109 South, but said it has no new detention centers in Tennessee to announce after earlier confusion over whether a property had been purchased.

The proposal has drawn pushback from some local leaders, including Republican Mayor Rick Bell, who says the city is not the right fit.

State GOP leaders are split on the move, with some saying they welcome an ICE facility and others affirming they support ICE’s broader mission but would prefer to keep the facility out of Lebanon.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center announced on Saturday that it will stop providing transgender-related plastic surgeries for adults, citing operational limitations and a lack of surgical coverage.

The hospital will continue nonsurgical transgender services for patients 19 and older while maintaining its existing policy of not treating minors under a 2023 state ban upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

VUMC said it is contacting affected patients about the change, which comes as state lawmakers are considering a bill to bar TennCare from covering sex-change surgeries for adults.

A proposed $7.25 billion settlement between Bayer and plaintiffs alleging that Roundup caused cancer comes as federal officials push to increase glyphosate production, intensifying the debate in Tennessee.

President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act this week to prioritize domestic production of the weedkiller ingredient, while Bayer continues to deny claims that glyphosate causes cancer.

Tennessee farmers say glyphosate is essential and not easily or affordably replaced, warning restrictions could drive up costs and hurt crop yields.

A state bill that would shield pesticide makers from certain failure-to-warn lawsuits passed the Senate but stalled in a House committee after backlash from advocacy groups and trial attorneys.
