Memphis police arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly using a self-checkout scam to purchase goods for $1 at a South Memphis Walmart, despite being banned from all Walmart stores nationwide due to similar past offenses.

Ashley Cross was charged with criminal trespass and theft under $1,000 after being taken into custody at the South Memphis location on Feb. 10, according to an affidavit.

An officer described her as a “known shoplifter,” and her previous offenses had placed her on Walmart’s Authorization of Agency list, barring her from entering any of its stores nationwide.

Water rescues took place in a flooded creek near Quinn Adams Street and East 42nd Street in Chattanooga last week, where rising waters trapped 10 people and several dogs in a large homeless encampment.

Chattanooga Fire’s Swiftwater Rescue Team spent hours searching individual camps, using boats to bring people and their pets to safety.

Firefighters rescued 10 people and 14 dogs by boat near Quinn Adams, while five others were able to walk out on the Workman Road side, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department. One dog didn’t make it.

Chattanooga Public Works blocked off the floodplain to prevent anyone from returning to the area.
