On this day in 2001, terrorists attacked the United States, killing nearly 3,000 people. UT Condemns Flyers Celebrating Kirk Killing

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville condemned mysterious flyers advertising a campus gathering that appeared to celebrate the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The posters promoted an event on the HSS Lawn marking one year since Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University, a university spokesperson said.

The school said it is not sponsoring any such event and that no organization has registered to use the space.

UT said it strongly condemns any message that makes light of violence or the loss of life, adding it had not determined who created the flyers as the anniversary drew similar incidents at campuses nationwide.

Hospitals Risk Losing Medicare Funding

Two Ascension Saint Thomas hospitals in Nashville face the loss of all Medicare funding after a catastrophic August medication mix-up that left four patients severely injured, at least three of them paralyzed.

Federal regulators warned the Midtown and West hospitals could lose their Medicare agreement after the system failed to submit an acceptable patient-safety plan.

The error occurred when a pharmacy filled syringes with potassium instead of an intended anesthetic during joint-replacement surgeries.

A state report cited multiple failures, the TBI is investigating, and the fallout has already rattled a separate deal for Ascension to buy Williamson County’s health system.

Tennessee Remembers 9/11 after 25 Years

Communities across Tennessee will hold numerous remembrance events this weekend to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in 2001.

In East Tennessee, ceremonies in Knoxville, Sevier County, Kingston, and Morristown will feature moments of silence, bell-ringing, and memorial stair climbs, with Knoxville moving its expanded observance to Delaney Plaza along Stadium Way.

Farther south, the Chattanooga Fire Department and WGOW-FM will gather at Fireman’s Fountain at 8:46 a.m. CDT, marking the moment the first plane struck, joined by the Chattanooga Pipe Band and UTC Chamber Singers.

In Middle Tennessee, Nashville firefighters will process down Broadway before a Schermerhorn Symphony Center ceremony, while Franklin, Murfreesboro, and Clarksville hold their own tributes to the fallen and the first responders who answered that day.
