Tennesseans Escape Middle East Conflict

Several East Tennessee travelers are back home after being stranded in the Middle East during the ongoing Iran conflict.

Two Knoxville-area residents visiting Abu Dhabi witnessed missile explosions and evacuated on a U.S. government-arranged flight after commercial options disappeared, eventually returning through Washington, D.C.

Similarly, a group of Carson-Newman University students, faculty, and chaperones in Jerusalem navigated buses, vans, and five airports to escape the region, traveling through Egypt before flying home.

Both groups returned safely to East Tennessee as widespread flight cancellations and regional instability complicated travel.

Cold Case Victim Identified After 38 Years

Authorities have identified a homicide victim found in Knoxville in 1988 after nearly four decades as James Robert Benson, a 22-year-old from the local area.

His body was discovered by railway workers in the Coster Rail Yard, but investigators at the time were unable to determine his identity, and the case went cold.

Through the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s unidentified remains initiative and advanced forensic genealogy testing, scientists matched DNA from the remains to Benson’s family earlier this year.

Detectives are now asking the public for information about who Benson may have been with before his death as the homicide investigation continues with renewed vigor.

Squirrel Knocks Out Nashville Power

A squirrel caused a power outage Monday morning that left more than 3,600 customers in Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood without electricity.

Nashville Electric Service said the animal tripped a breaker around 10:30 a.m., cutting power, which was restored less than an hour later.

Utility officials say squirrels are a surprisingly common culprit, ranking as the third-leading cause of outages nationwide behind equipment issues and fallen trees.

In Tennessee, however, trees remain the biggest driver of power disruptions.
