Clerk Indicted on Federal Fraud Charges

Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer was indicted Monday on six federal counts, including wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds.

Prosecutors allege Sawyer embezzled more than $44,000 using county procurement cards and a credit card to cover personal expenses like bar tabs, Uber Eats orders, hotel stays, and payments to her own PayPal account.

Sawyer allegedly laundered some funds through a friend’s PayPal account, who took a cut and returned the rest via CashApp. She pleaded not guilty and was released on her own recognizance.

If convicted on all counts, she faces up to 20 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. The Republican Party of Shelby County has called for the Democrat’s immediate removal.

Nashville Racing the Clock for Super Bowl LXIV

Nashville’s East Bank Development Authority says it is on a “very tight” 40-month deadline to finish a sweeping infrastructure overhaul around Nissan Stadium before Super Bowl LXIV.

The city’s to-do list includes updates to roads and utilities, the construction of a new hotel, putting up the exterior of a new Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and finishing the Seigenthaler Bridge Connector, which links the East Bank and downtown.

Affordable housing is already under construction.

Officials say all work wraps by the end of 2029, though some construction halts near game time for security. East Bank Boulevard is the lone exception, as it breaks ground after the Super Bowl.

Tennessee Pearls Displayed in the Smithsonian

Tennessee’s freshwater pearls are among more than 600 objects representing all 50 states in the Smithsonian’s new From These Lands exhibition, which opens tomorrow to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

The pearls, collected by the American Pearl Company in Nashville in 1994, are Tennessee’s official state gem, produced by freshwater mussels once harvested statewide from the 1880s through World War I. Some Clinch River pearls even made it to Paris.

Dams and pollution ended the industry, but conservation efforts are quietly reviving mussel populations in East Tennessee rivers.

Other highlights include a rare blue gemstone from California and a Northern bobwhite collected by a young Theodore Roosevelt in New York.
