Article Icon 1Bill to Stop Antisemitic Attacks Passes

A bill cracking down on hate-driven public displays passed the Tennessee House Monday and now awaits Gov. Bill Lee’s signature.

The PEACE Act, prompted by recent neo-Nazi activity and synagogue harassment in Nashville, bans distributing hate flyers, hanging banners from overpasses, and getting within 25 feet of a police officer after being told to back off.

The debate over the bill turned fiery as Democrats accused Republicans of enabling hate, while GOP leaders shot back, calling the criticism itself racist.

Applications have opened for 14 counties impacted by Hurricane Helene to request a portion of the $100 million Governor’s Response and Recovery Fund.

The General Assembly approved the fund’s creation in January at Gov. Bill Lee’s request to assist local governments, nonprofits, businesses, farmers, and foresters still struggling to recover from hurricane damage.

The fund is also intended to prepare the state to assist struggling counties with recovery from future disasters.

The current deadline to apply for a grant from the fund is Saturday, May 31. You can find the application here.

Applications opened Monday for the second year of a program allowing Tennessee high school seniors to earn real estate licenses before graduation.

The free initiative requires students to complete 90 hours of coursework and pass licensing exams within 100 days.

About 150 seniors will be accepted this year, with emphasis on students from economically distressed counties.

The Tennessee Real Estate Commission, which oversees the program, maintains standard licensing requirements while giving students an early career advantage. Details about the program are available here
