Article Icon 1Memphis Doctor Indicted on 23 Charges

An East Memphis gynecologist has been indicted on 23 federal charges, including healthcare fraud and coercing individuals into sexual acts, according to updated reports on Monday.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, 44, was taken into custody following a federal indictment first filed Thursday and unsealed Friday afternoon. His court hearing is scheduled for today.

According to the indictment, between September 2019 and April 2024, Kumar allegedly committed multiple crimes, including coercing four victims to travel to Memphis for sexual acts.

The FBI is looking for more potential victims of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, who they say were patients at the Poplar Avenue Clinic. If convicted, Kumar faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a minimum of five years of supervised release.

Former American Idol contestant Colin Stough was arrested on DUI charges early Friday morning in Tennessee, according to authorities.

Stough, who competed in Season 21 of the reality singing competition, was taken into custody by Tennessee Highway Patrol after officers responded to a single-vehicle crash just before 1:30 a.m. in Williamson County outside of Nashville. 

The 20-year-old was charged with driving under the influence, underage alcohol consumption, and failure to exercise due care.

During his 2023 run on American Idol, Stough impressed judges with his rockabilly style, finishing third behind Iam Tongi and Megan Danielle.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald is celebrating 30 years of providing care for elephants.

Founded in 1995, it is the largest natural habitat refuge designed specifically for Asian and African elephants.

What began as a 110-acre facility has expanded to over 3,060 acres, offering care to 34 elephants. The anniversary celebration kicked off Monday, with the elephants receiving special special items, including a donut filled with feed and hay for African elephant Edie.

The sanctuary is also preparing to welcome two female elephants from the Louisville Zoo this summer.
