Article Icon 1Warm Start to March, Storms Ahead

Middle Tennessee is coming off the warmest start to March ever recorded in Nashville, with the first week averaging 64.3 degrees, which is well above the typical average of about 52 degrees.

The unusual warmth has been fueled by steady southerly winds pulling warm air from the Gulf while colder Canadian air remains trapped farther north.

But the springlike pattern is also setting the stage for active weather this week.

Forecasters warn multiple rounds of thunderstorms are possible, with the greatest risk being tomorrow when damaging winds, hail, and even tornadoes could develop across the mid-state.

Article Icon 1Chemical Incidents Disrupt Towns

Two chemical-related incidents in southeast Tennessee caused road closures and emergency alerts over the weekend.

Early Saturday, a semi truck leaking nitric acid forced officials to shut down the I-24 off-ramp and parts of Wauhatchie Pike near Lookout Valley while hazmat crews and an environmental cleanup team worked to contain the spill.

A day earlier in nearby Charleston, a chemical release and fire at the Wacker Polysilicon plant triggered a shelter-in-place order and road closures before officials later declared the situation contained.

Authorities reported no injuries in either incident, and the shelter order in Charleston was lifted once conditions were deemed safe.

Article Icon 1Pigs Harass Chattanooga Neighborhood

Residents along Tunnel Boulevard in Chattanooga say a small group of pigs has taken over their neighborhood, roaming yards and streets for the past two weeks.

Neighbors report the herd has grown from about three pigs to as many as six, with the animals digging up lawns and ignoring attempts to scare them away. See video of the pig gang here.

Frustrated homeowners say calls to wildlife and animal control agencies have produced little help.

“If you’re into eating pigs, you can have them,” one frustrated resident told the public. “Come and get them. I won’t help you load them up, but I wish you well.”
