Shelby County officials may seek $10 billion in federal funding to combat violent crime, following FBI Director Kash Patel’s statement labeling Memphis the “homicide capital” of the U.S.

A resolution sponsored by Commissioner Mick Wright calls for designating Memphis and Shelby County a federal “priority community.”

The proposed funds would support a new jail ($1.4 billion), rebuild the Regional One Trauma Center ($1.5 billion), and tackle school maintenance backlogs ($2 billion).

Local leaders, including Mayor Paul Young and Sen. Marsha Blackburn, have signaled support for increased resources amid rising public safety concerns.

A strong geomagnetic storm on Monday briefly brought the aurora borealis into Tennessee skies, though most sightings were limited to northern states. 

Tennesseans may get another rare glimpse of the northern lights soon as the sun nears its “solar maximum” in July 2025, according to NOAA.

While sightings in Tennessee are unlikely, past solar cycles have brought the lights as far south as Alabama.

Country star Jelly Roll stunned fans at his Friday concert by announcing he won’t perform in Nashville again until 2027.

The Tennessee native said he’s aiming to be the first artist to play the new Nissan Stadium when it opens that spring.

Roll noted he’s already sold out Bridgestone Arena three times, calling the move a step toward something even bigger.

Fans cheered the decision, hailing Jelly Roll as a hometown hero worthy of the honor.
