Republican Matt Van Epps holds a slim lead over Democrat Aftyn Behn in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, with a new poll showing him ahead 48% to 46% heading into today’s special election.

The race has drawn national attention, especially after Behn declined to walk back past comments critiquing the police and Nashville in a CNN interview.

Behn, a state representative from Nashville, defended the remarks as expressions made during the 2020 protests, saying she wouldn’t post them today as a lawmaker.

The economy remains the top concern for voters in the typically red district, which includes parts of urban Nashville and 13 rural counties.

Immigration activists staged a protest Sunday at Nashville International Airport (BNA), urging travelers to boycott Avelo Airlines over claims that the company helps operate deportation flights.

Organized by the Nashville Boycott Avelo Movement, the demonstration was part of a nationwide protest in more than 20 cities.

Protesters say Avelo holds a contract with ICE, but the airline denies that claim.

Avelo says it has no contracts with ICE or Homeland Security but has operated government charters under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
