Question: Where did the invasive Joro spider species get its name?

Answer: Joro spiders are named for the Jorōgumo, a shape-shifting spider creature from Japanese folklore. The spiders are native to East Asia and first turned up in Georgia around 2014, likely as stowaways in shipping containers.
