Answer: On September 21, 1807, Kingston was briefly the capital of Tennessee to honor a promise to the Cherokee. They had been assured that if they ceded land in Roane County, the capital would be moved there. However, the Tennessee General Assembly returned the capital to Knoxville the next day.
