Article Icon 1Legislators Unveil New Congressional Map

Tennessee Republicans unveiled a new congressional map on Thursday that would likely hand the GOP all nine of the state’s U.S. House seats.

The proposal would split the majority-black Shelby County and Memphis-based district held by Rep. Steve Cohen, D, following last week’s Supreme Court ruling on minority voting districts.

Republican leaders say the redraw aligns with the court’s push for color-blind redistricting and strengthens their position heading into the 2026 midterms.

The plan is expected to clear the GOP-controlled legislature quickly, with votes likely taking place today.

Wildlife officers in Tennessee and Kentucky said a poaching investigation uncovered more than 160 charges tied to illegal deer hunting and exotic animals across multiple counties.

The case began after a Jefferson County deputy stopped a vehicle tied to a suspected road-hunting incident the day after Christmas 2024.

Investigators later found photos and videos showing illegally possessed American alligators, venomous snakes, and unlawful animal killings.

Officers seized two alligators, a false water cobra, guns, and bows while filing 142 charges in Tennessee and 18 more in Kentucky.

A Tennessee National Guard helicopter crew rescued a stranded hiker and his German Shepherd from the Cherokee National Forest after the pair spent nearly a day trapped in rugged terrain.

Rescue crews found the man hypothermic in the Sampson Mountain Wilderness near Erwin after temperatures dropped into the 40s overnight.

Officials said the hiker was too weak to climb out safely, so a UH-60 Black Hawk crew hoisted both him and the dog, Jack, about 150 feet into the helicopter. One rescuer even improvised a special harness to lift the dog aboard.

The hiker received IV fluids and first aid during the flight before both were taken to waiting paramedics in stable condition.
