Wednesday marked the deadline for Tennessee families awarded private school vouchers off the waitlist to claim their funding under the state’s new Education Freedom Scholarship program.

Nearly 40,000 families applied, but technical glitches and slow notifications left some scrambling.

The initiative, backed by Gov. Bill Lee and narrowly passed in a 2024 special session, offers $7,295 per student and plans to distribute 20,000 scholarships this year.

East Tennessee residents in the 423 area code must begin dialing all 10 digits for local calls on Aug. 5 as the region prepares to add the new 729 area code.

New phone lines will begin using the 729 area code on Sept. 5 as the 423 code nears exhaustion, following delays caused by Hurricane Helene. The change affects areas from Johnson City to Chattanooga and surrounding rural counties.

Emergency and special numbers like 911 and 988 won’t be affected.

A Gatlinburg rental cabin famously transformed into the “Eggo House of Pancakes” is now up for sale at $699,900.

The breakfast-themed rental, once decked out with syrup fountains and flapjack siding as part of an Eggo spring break promo in 2024, still features touches like an Eggo-yellow pool table and branded mailbox.

Located in Sevier County’s Leconte subdivision, the 1986-built property last sold in 2021 for $485,000.

Some of the more whimsical decor has been removed, but the listing still leans heavily on nostalgia and novelty. See photos and the rental listing here.
