Three people are dead and one is missing after more than 6 inches of rain swamped Chattanooga on Tuesday, marking the city’s second-wettest day on record.

Officials say two adults and a child were killed when a tree fell on their car, and rescuers are searching for a man swept away in floodwaters.

The downpour shut down parts of I-24, stranded drivers, and forced evacuations, prompting a state of emergency.

More periods of scattered showers and storms are expected to return today.

Mason leaders voted on Tuesday to turn a shuttered prison into an immigration detention center to be operated by private operator CoreCivic.

The deal with CoreCivic and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement follows President Trump’s reversal of a ban on federal contracts with private detention facilities.

Supporters, including Mayor Eddie Noeman, say the move will bring 240 jobs and hundreds of thousands in tax revenue, while opponents cite CoreCivic’s record of fines and understaffing.
