Article Icon 1Educators Push to Limit Screen Time

Tennessee lawmakers passed legislation requiring schools serving kindergarten through fifth grade to limit students’ use of digital devices, prompting educators, parents, and districts statewide to reconsider classroom technology.

The Professional Educators of Tennessee is urging lawmakers to reduce screen time and revive traditional methods, arguing that students retain more from textbooks than from screens.

In Knox County, among the parents advocating for change is Margot Kern, founder of Knox IRL, a community group focused on reducing children’s reliance on screens and encouraging more real-world interaction. The group pressed the school board to rethink device use and the district said it would adopt a policy complying with the state law.

The law takes effect in the 2026-27 school year, allowing schools to set their own limits. Nashville’s Linden Waldorf School illustrates a long-standing low-tech approach. The school’s students insist they are more social and focused as a result.

Article Icon 1Soybean Farmers Feeling Optimistic

Tennessee soybean farmers are seeing improved morale as 2026 prices rise and China, the biggest buyer of U.S. soybean exports, resumes buying U.S. soybeans under a trade agreement.

China agreed to buy 12 million metric tons in 2025 and at least 25 million annually through 2028. Early-year sales to China rose 49%, but the marketing-year total still lags.

Officials, including Tennessee Soybean Promotion Council executive director Stefan Maupin, say improved prices may still fall short of break-even. “There have been some positive movements in trade relations with China, specifically with soybeans, that have caused markets to improve over last year. However, we are definitely not where we were in years past.” Maupin said.

When asked about China’s total soybean purchases lagging behind previous years, a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesperson stated that President Trump “has made clear he will hold China to its commitments.”

Soybeans are Tennessee’s top crop, and a major agricultural product nationwide, covering about 10% of all U.S. farmland. More than 40% of U.S. soybeans are exported, and in recent years, roughly 60% of exported beans went to China.

Article Icon 1Increased Bear Sightings Across Middle TN

Police across Middle Tennessee are warning residents not to approach or feed black bears as sightings rise during the warm-weather months, when the animals roam seeking food and territory.

The Millersville Police Department reported a bear near the Turners Bend subdivision Wednesday, joining recent sightings in counties including Hickman, Dickson, Wilson, Sumner, and Cheatham.

Other bears were spotted in Whites Creek, Bethpage, White House, and Cross Plains, where one destroyed a couple’s beehives while foraging for food.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency calls the expansion a conservation success, advising residents to secure trash, pet food, and bird feeders, and to never approach the animals.
