Article Icon 1TSU Faces $46 Million Shortfall

Tennessee State University could face a $46 million deficit by the end of the year if it doesn’t receive financial assistance, auditors told the Board of Trustees.

The auditing update followed a warning to state lawmakers and the state comptroller that TSU would be unable to make its November payroll without additional state funding.

To avoid the shortfall in the current fiscal year, university leaders said they plan to repurpose $32.3 million in federal pandemic relief funds and secure $7.3 million owed to the university by Saudi Arabia.

They’ll also free up millions more through vendor contract negotiations, operating expense reductions and fundraising efforts.
