Article Icon 1Heat Index Nears 110 Degrees This Week

Another heat wave is on the way for Tennessee this week as forecasters warn of heat index values approaching 110 degrees today and tomorrow. Actual temperatures are set to climb into the mid- to upper 90s.

West Tennessee faces the worst of it, with an Extreme Heat Warning in place through Tuesday evening and feels-like temperatures approaching 110 degrees in some areas.

Scattered showers and storms are possible in parts of the state as a cold front sweeps through late Tuesday, and the pattern finally breaks on Wednesday with noticeably cooler and less humid air.

Conditions in Middle Tennessee improve significantly by Thursday and Friday, with highs in the upper 80s and lower humidity before another round of rain chances arrives over the weekend.

A Southwest Airlines flight attendant was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Nashville International Airport on July 14 after DHS identified him as a Jamaican national who overstayed a visa.

Friends say Lorenzo Thompson has a valid work permit and no criminal record, and that he came to the United States seeking safety from life-threatening abuse in Jamaica.

The Union of Southwest Flight Attendants confirmed the detention on social media, adding that the union is collaborating with Thompson’s attorney.

Thompson is currently being held at an ICE facility in Natchez, Mississippi, pending immigration proceedings.

A 15-year-old Farragut High School student has built VoteKnox.org, a nonpartisan website compiling every race on the Knox County ballot, including every candidate’s own description of themselves.

Garrett Jobes said the idea came from dinner table conversations about how difficult it is to research local candidates, especially for less familiar offices like county clerk. He drew descriptions directly from candidates’ own websites to avoid bias.

The site launched last week and has already received more than 2,000 page views. Jobes is still adding features as early voting runs through Saturday ahead of Election Day on Aug. 6.

“The decisions made by our elected representatives affect all of us, regardless of our age,” Jobes said, citing Thomas Jefferson’s observation that government is run by the majority who participate.
