Article Icon 1Suspected Gang Member Caught

An alleged member of the violent Venezuela-based Tren de Aragua gang was among 94 people detained in a joint operation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol and ICE, authorities announced Wednesday.

The gang affiliate was caught during a sweeping traffic enforcement effort that also uncovered illegal drugs and firearms.

The operation involved nearly 370 vehicle stops and flagged multiple felony suspects, but the arrest of a Tren de Aragua member—a group linked to international organized crime—stood out as a major security win.

State officials stressed that the operation targeted driving violations, not people, and that federal agents were handling further criminal probes.

Three former Memphis police officers were acquitted Wednesday of all state charges in the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols, a black man whose fatal encounter with police was caught on video and sparked national controversy.

A jury deliberated for just over eight hours before clearing Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith of second-degree murder and other charges.

The officers, all also black, claimed Nichols resisted arrest after fleeing a traffic stop near his mother’s home.

Though they still face sentencing for federal convictions, the state verdict prompted fierce criticism from Nichols’ family attorneys, who called the outcome a “devastating miscarriage of justice.”

The CMA Foundation has named 30 educators, including 15 Tennesseans, to its 2025 Music Teachers of Excellence class, recognizing standout music teachers across 11 states for their impact in the classroom.

The Tennessee honorees include educators spanning Nashville, Smyrna, Murfreesboro, and Memphis.

Each awardee received $5,000, divided equally between personal use and school programs, and will be celebrated at a red-carpet gala on September 10 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville.

Teachers were selected through a competitive process that evaluated teaching quality, classroom creativity, and leadership.
