A federal investigation into a 2019 car accident near Knoxville led to charges against five high-ranking members of Mexico’s United Cartels.

Indictments unsealed on Thursday by the Department of Justice charge three leaders and two senior enforcers of the cartel with manufacturing and distributing controlled substances.

The investigation began after suspects fled a 2019 crash and discarded a protective case filled with methamphetamine behind a building before police caught them. Authorities used wiretaps, search warrants and surveillance to build their case.

The U.S. has offered $10 million for the capture of cartel leader Juan José Farías Álvarez, “El Abuelo,” and multimillion-dollar rewards for four others, all believed to be in Mexico.

Two Knoxville businesses say they lost thousands after mailing checks that were later stolen and altered, prompting a federal investigation.

Over the last two months, Knoxville Police filed 15 reports tied to check fraud, mostly involving checks dropped in blue USPS boxes.

Victims include a consignment shop and a startup auto business—both now dealing with major disruptions and unrecovered losses.

Postal inspectors are urging folks to avoid outdoor drop boxes after pickup hours and switch to gel pens and in-person drop-offs for safer mailing.

Two Cordova men allegedly used movie prop money to steal $160,000 in high-end jewelry from a Boston shop in April.

Devin Johnson and an unnamed accomplice allegedly paid cash for Rolex watches and diamond chains, but the bills—marked “In Prop We Trust”—were fake.

Boston police identified the suspects through security footage and social media posts flaunting the goods.

Johnson has been charged with felony larceny and is due back in court Sept. 23, while his partner has yet to be arraigned.
