Article Icon 1Neighbors Help Flood Recovery Efforts

Water, shovels, and cash are headed to Copperhill after flash flooding damaged 45 homes and 42 businesses in Polk County.

Torrential rain sent the Ocoee River to a record 18.05 feet Thursday, topping a mark set in 1990. Swift-water teams rescued more than 100 people and 25 dogs across Tennessee and Georgia.

Mayor Greg Barker says money helps most right now, through the city’s disaster relief fund at People’s First Bank. In Chattanooga, a ModWash car wash is collecting supplies through Nov. 14 for its district manager to deliver Nov. 15.

Tellico Plains, which flooded in 2021 and 2023, is gathering water, gloves, and shovels for Copperhill. Mayor Marilyn Parker said help “is still going to be needed four, five, six, seven months from now.”

Article Icon 1Carter County Lands State Housing Study

Carter County will get a state-backed housing market study to pin down how many homes it needs to keep pace with growth.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) picked 14 counties for the studies, including Sullivan, Unicoi, Greene, and Cocke in East Tennessee. A consulting firm will visit each county and gauge demand for everything from rentals to single-family homes.

Carter’s application came from Noah Morrison, a state rural fellow who started in the county in August and will lead the work locally. Mayor Patty Woodby called the selection “an important step toward better understanding the housing needs of our community.”

The state already ran the same studies for every West Tennessee county to prepare for Ford’s BlueOval City truck plant. TNECD Assistant Commissioner Brooxie Carlton said that work showed “how valuable county-specific housing data can be” to local leaders planning for growth.

Article Icon 1Tennessee Layoff Notices Top 6,600 Workers

Tennessee employers have filed layoff or closure notices covering 6,655 workers so far this year.

Seven notices posted since mid-August account for 673 of those jobs, led by Wise Company in Hardin County with 129 and Kilgore Flares in Hardeman County with 127. Pepsi Bottling Group listed 112 Knox County workers, and Del Mar Medical filed the latest notice on Nov. 3, covering 52 in Wilson County.

In Nashville, the General Jackson Showboat will lay off 114 people when it docks for good Dec. 15 after more than 40 years on the Cumberland River. Paint maker Akzo Nobel listed 76 more Davidson County jobs ending Dec. 31.

The notices warn of upcoming closings and mass layoffs, so not every listed worker is out of a job yet. Earlier filings covered 250 workers at TikTok’s Nashville office and 325 at Carlex in Monroe County.
