Article Icon 1Record Flooding Swamps Copperhill

Tennessee activated Level 4 emergency operations as crews carried out aerial and swiftwater rescues in Polk County, where the Ocoee River crested at a record 18.05 feet at Copperhill early Thursday.

The crest topped the all-time record at Copperhill in 80 years of recordkeeping, according to the National Weather Service.

Floodwaters also swamped neighboring McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill closed the city and urged people to stay away from downtown.

The flooding forced bridge and school closures in two small towns, home to fewer than 500 people in Copperhill and about 1,000 in McCaysville.

Article Icon 1Blackburn Lays Out Affordability Plan

Governor-elect Marsha Blackburn outlined an affordability agenda that includes eliminating the state’s 4% grocery tax and capping property taxes.

She also plans to tackle child care and housing costs, and says she’ll start working on the issues during her transition ahead of her January inauguration.

Blackburn, the first woman elected governor of Tennessee, pledged a “conservative reset” for the state during the campaign.

Tennessee is one of the few states that still taxes groceries, though lawmakers approved a three-month grocery tax holiday in 2023.

Appalachian Bear Rescue released six cubs into the wild Tuesday after all of them passed their physical exams with top marks.

It’s a milestone for the Townsend rescue, which reopened in June after a year-and-a-half shutdown that followed the euthanizing of 13 cubs with pneumonia in December 2024.

The rescue’s first cub back, nicknamed Hemlock Bear, arrived in July weighing just seven pounds, and four orphaned Washington County cubs joined in August.

Under new state rules, cubs are released individually or in small groups once they reach about 40 pounds, instead of in large winter releases.
