Senator Sues over Committee Punishment

State Sen. Charlane Oliver, D-Nashville, sued Lt. Gov. Randy McNally over punishments she received for protesting on the Senate floor during May’s special session on redistricting.

Oliver stood on her desk and unfurled a banner reading “No Jim Crow 2.0” as Republicans passed a congressional map that split Memphis into three districts.

McNally removed her from the Government Operations Committee and restricted her per diem, saying that as “the most egregious offender,” she earned the most significant penalty.

Her federal lawsuit argues the punishments violated her free speech rights and her constituents’ right to equal representation.

60 Bears Put Down in Sevier County

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has humanely killed 60 bears in Sevier County this year after conflicts with people, including break-ins at cars and occupied buildings.

Officials say the county’s dense bear population and millions of yearly visitors make it a hot spot, and at least 15 states have reported more bear incidents than last year.

A state law that took effect July 1 makes feeding black bears a crime, with fines starting at $250 for intentional feeding or leaving food or trash unsecured.

Officials also credit Gatlinburg’s roughly $3 million investment in more than 460 bear-resistant dumpsters, which they said has worked “remarkably well.”

Soybean Fest Nets $26K for Firefighters

Martin’s volunteer-run Grassroots Soybean Festival raised more than $26,700 for the city’s fire department after the traditional Tennessee Soybean Festival was canceled over the city’s financial troubles.

Organizers had raised more than $100,000 going into festival week, including $30,000 from the city and $25,000 from the state Department of Agriculture.

Proceeds go to the Friend of a Firefighter campaign to replace the department’s nearly 11-year-old breathing gear, with 22 sets needed at about $10,000 each.

The department has applied for a federal grant that requires a 10% local match, and Fire Chief Jamie Summers said the department is “very anxiously waiting” to hear back.
