Another Heat Wave Batters Tennessee

Parts of Tennessee are sweltering through another day of extreme heat, with a heat advisory in effect today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and afternoon highs in the lower to mid-90s.

The prolonged heat has strained communities across the state, closing at least one Middle Tennessee school district and prompting safety precautions for high school football.

In the Tennessee Valley, experts warn the heat is especially dangerous for older adults, noting that common blood-pressure medications and diuretics can interfere with the body’s ability to cool itself.

Relief is finally near: a cold front arrives tomorrow, bringing scattered showers, storms, and slightly cooler highs to break the worst of the heat.

Cave Search Ends with a Twist

Emergency crews in Claiborne County checked a dozen caves Monday after a report that someone might be trapped underground in the rugged upper East Tennessee terrain.

The Office of Emergency Management identified 12 caves near where the person was thought to be and searched each one, with Knox County and Hamilton County cave-rescue teams on standby.

But further investigation took an unexpected turn when officials determined the individual’s cellphone was actually pinging in Lexington, Kentucky, and their mother was located in Louisville.

Authorities asked Louisville police to conduct a welfare check to confirm the person was safe, and the multi-agency cave search, which had involved state and federal partners, came to an end.

Carter Turns $427 Suspension into Cancer Fight

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter is turning his NCAA suspension into a donation drive for cancer patients, pledging $427 for every tackle he makes this season, the exact cost of the agent-paid flight that got him benched.

Carter, who sat out the Vols’ opener against Furman, will also give $500 per sack, $1,000 per interception or forced fumble, and $5,000 per defensive touchdown, with the money going to Nashville-area charities like Sisters Network Nashville.

The cause is deeply personal: his girlfriend, ICU nurse Mariah Bryant, is battling stage 2 breast cancer.

Fan and podcaster Clay Travis has pledged to match every $427, and given Carter’s SEC-leading tackle numbers, the total could climb fast.
