Trump Endorses Blackburn

President Donald Trump endorsed U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn for governor on Friday, a day after she won the Republican primary against Rep. John Rose.

Trump had declined to endorse in the primary, a rare move in a Republican contest. In January he praised Blackburn but said he did not want to lose her from the Senate.

Blackburn, 74, has served in the Senate since 2018 and in the House since 2003. If she wins in November, she would become Tennessee’s first female governor.

She faces Memphis City Council member Jerri Green in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Bill Lee. Blackburn is one of several senators seeking governorships this cycle.

Wildfire Smoke, Heat for Week Ahead

Hazy skies are back over Middle Tennessee this week, and wildfires burning in Canada and the western U.S. are to blame, WSMV meteorologists said Monday.

The smoke is trapped high in the atmosphere and carried by the jet stream, so it will not affect local air quality. A similar haze settled over the Midstate in late July.

Heat is the bigger story. Highs land in the low-to-mid 90s with a heat index of 100 to 105 degrees, and Wednesday brings the week’s best chance of storms.

The heat wave coincides with back-to-school week for many areas, including Davidson County, which starts today with a high near 95.

Traffic Measures Planned for State Fair

State transportation officials are putting temporary traffic measures in place in Wilson County ahead of the Tennessee State Fair, which runs Aug. 13 through Aug. 22.

Starting today, the speed limit on Interstate 40 through Lebanon drops from 70 mph to 60 mph, and it will stay there for the length of the fair.

TDOT will add a HELP Truck and a Rural Service Patrol vehicle each afternoon, and crews will extend the westbound I-40 on-ramp at mile marker 239 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.

Organizers expect nearly 1 million visitors. Two ramps close overnight Monday for paving, and AAA is separately urging drivers to slow down in school zones.
