Article Icon 1Professor Sues Senator Over Firing

Austin Peay State University theater professor Darren Michael sued Sen. Marsha Blackburn on Aug. 7, a day after she won the GOP gubernatorial primary.

The suit says Blackburn used her governmental authority to suppress protected speech after Michael shared a 2023 article quoting Charlie Kirk on gun deaths.

Michael was fired the next day without notice or a hearing, the complaint says, and his family moved after the school released his home address.

APSU later reinstated him and paid a $500,000 settlement. A Blackburn spokesperson called the suit meritless and said the senator has not yet been served.
