Federal Court Clears New Congressional Map

A federal three-judge panel approved use of Tennessee’s newly redrawn congressional map, allowing it to be used in the Aug. 6 primary election. The map changes the Memphis-area congressional boundaries and has drawn criticism from civil rights groups, while Republican officials argue the changes are driven by political considerations rather than race.

Three Memphis voters along with the Black Clergy Collaborative of Memphis, Memphis A. Philip Randolph Institute, and The Equity Alliance filed a lawsuit arguing that the map discriminates against Black voters. The judges determined that the map was driven by politics, not race.

The map will apply to August’s primary and November’s general election. Plaintiffs said they will continue their underlying lawsuit despite the setback.

Tennessee Approves 3-Year Degree Pathway

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission approved a new policy establishing “Focused Bachelor’s Degrees,” streamlining programs to 90 credit hours by reducing electives, letting students graduate in three years rather than four.

Officials say the option, meant to supplement the traditional 120-hour path, could cut costs and student debt by up to 25% while targeting high-demand fields like business, nursing, and social work.

The University of Tennessee System’s five campuses plan to explore such programs beginning in the fall of 2026, joining Tennessee State University’s existing “Degree-In-3” offering and similar efforts in other states.

Critics, including the American Association of University Professors, warn that compressed curricula could prioritize speed over broader intellectual development and weaken academic standards.

Erlanger Health Explores $2B Partnership

Chattanooga-based Erlanger Health has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join South Carolina’s Prisma Health, a proposed partnership that would bring $2 billion in investments over 15 years.

The deal, following nearly a year-long partner search, would make Erlanger a subsidiary of Prisma, which operates 20 hospitals and serves over 1.6 million patients annually. Erlanger’s name, staff, and services would remain.

Leaders say the funding would upgrade facilities, expand outpatient and urgent care, and preserve programs including the Level I Trauma Center, Children’s Hospital, and safety-net operations.

The agreement enters a 120-day due diligence period and requires approval from Erlanger’s board, county commissioners, and state and federal regulators.
