COGIC Bishop Accused in $200M Fraud

Eli Lilly has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Nashville-based DrugPlace, an affiliated company called Community Health, and a Church of God in Christ bishop and family members of scheming to fraudulently collect more than $200 million in prescription drug rebates.

The complaint alleges the defendants ran a sham program for COGIC members, buying large quantities of the diabetes drug Trulicity and then submitting rebate claims as if it had been dispensed to patients.

The rest of the scheme involved reselling the drug on the secondary market for additional profit.

Lilly is seeking damages, restitution, disgorgement of profits, and a court order to stop future filings without proof that the drugs were actually dispensed.

AG Says Kalshi Is Sports Betting

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is taking his fight against prediction market platform Kalshi to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing the company is running sports betting under a different name.

Kalshi lets users place trades tied to sports outcomes, like who wins games, player performance, and whether teams cover the spread. The company argues its products are “swaps” regulated under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, putting them beyond the reach of state gambling laws.

“Kalshi can call their bets ‘swaps’ all they want, but everyone who so much as glances at the platform understands that this is sports gambling,” Skrmetti said in a statement.

The appeal comes after a federal district judge in Nashville sided with Kalshi earlier this year, granting an injunction against state enforcement.

TN Enjoys Safest Memorial Day in Years

Tennessee had its best Memorial Day on the roads in recent memory, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol recording just one fatality statewide over the 2026 holiday weekend.

That single death marks a dramatic drop from the eight killed last Memorial Day and the 14 killed in 2024. Troopers responded to 776 crashes and assisted 454 motorists across the state during the holiday travel period.

State officials credited drivers across Tennessee for making safer choices like slowing down, buckling up, and cutting impaired driving.

The THP had increased enforcement statewide, targeting speed, distracted driving, and seat belts throughout the holiday period.
