Nearly 1 Mil. Tennesseans to Travel for Holiday

AAA says nearly 950,000 Tennesseans are expected to travel at least 50 miles for Memorial Day weekend, setting a new state record despite stubborn inflation and higher gas prices.

Most travelers, about 795,000, will hit the road, while nearly 115,000 are expected to fly, and another 40,000 will travel by train, bus, or cruise.

Nationally, AAA projects almost 45 million Americans will travel over the holiday, also a record high, though growth has slowed to less than 1% from last year.

Traffic experts say the worst congestion will likely hit Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Tren de Aragua Linked to Nashville Bust

Federal prosecutors say five suspected associates of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua have been charged after a Homeland Security investigation into drug and gun trafficking in the Nashville area.

Authorities say the probe uncovered cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, and ketamine trafficking, along with 25 seized firearms. Eight of the weapons were reported stolen, and two were linked to prior Nashville shootings.

Investigators say the operation has been underway since September 2025 and targets several men accused of running drug and firearms trafficking networks across Middle Tennessee.

Charges include conspiracy to traffic drugs and firearms, with prosecutors signaling more arrests could follow.

Chattanooga Officer Saves Family from Fire

A Chattanooga police officer is being hailed as a hero after body camera footage showed him running into a burning Hixson apartment to rescue a family trapped inside.

Police say Officer Rogers responded just before 10 p.m. on May 1 on Cranberry Way after neighbors warned that people were still inside the home.

Authorities say Rogers pulled two children and their mother from the apartment as flames spread near the front door. See the video here.

No injuries were reported, and Chattanooga police praised the officer’s quick actions, saying he lived up to the oath to “serve and protect.”
