House Votes to Expand School Vouchers

The Tennessee House narrowly passed legislation Monday to expand the Education Freedom Scholarship program from 20,000 to 35,000 students.

Legislators voted 52-43 to add 15,000 private-school seats for the 2026-27 school year, with each scholarship worth $7,295.

More than 56,000 families have already applied, a volume that far exceeds available spots.

Supporters say the program gives parents more control over education, while critics argue it diverts public funds from traditional schools and lacks oversight. The legislation now moves to the Senate.

New Market Plane Crash Kills Two

Two people died Monday afternoon when a Beechcraft 58 plane crashed in a field off Burchell Road in New Market, according to fire officials and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Crews responded to find the plane, which had recently taken off from Knoxville’s Downtown Island Airport, engulfed in flames.

A nearby resident said the impact “rattled the house,” describing a loud explosion that shook the ground.

The NTSB is leading the investigation and will move the wreckage for further analysis.

Ja Morant Lists His Eads Estate

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is selling his Eads estate for $3.5 million, a sprawling 13,000-square-foot home he bought in 2022 after signing a major contract extension.
