Article Icon 1Manhattan Project Radiation Claims Open

The U.S. Department of Justice has expanded the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act program, allowing some residents of Anderson, Roane, and Morgan counties to seek payments tied to Manhattan Project radiation exposure.

People who lived, worked, or attended school in affected areas for at least 24 months and later developed certain cancers or blood diseases may qualify.

Eligible individuals can receive $50,000, while surviving family members of deceased victims may receive $25,000.

Local attorneys say many residents still don’t know about the program, which aims to help cover medical costs tied to radiation-related illnesses. Learn more about the program here.

Article Icon 1High Pressure Holds Storms Away

Near-record warmth reached Nashville this week as temperatures climbed to 79 degrees on Wednesday, while a strong dome of high pressure over the Mid-South kept severe storms away.

Meteorologists say these high-pressure ridges act as a barrier, forcing storm systems to move around the region instead of through it.

The setup has kept typical spring threats like tornadoes, hail, damaging winds and flooding mainly west and north of the region.

Forecasters say Middle Tennessee could see a few strong storms move through tomorrow as a cold front moves through the region.

Students at L&N STEM Academy in Knoxville have been selected for the national Silent Heroes program, pairing them with historians to research and document the lives of World War II veterans.

The class studied East Tennessee Marines Cpl. George Price and Staff Sgt. Carl Taylor by digging through military records, census data and family histories.

Their work also included meeting relatives of the veterans and visiting the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, where they are buried.

The program aims to preserve personal stories from the war and connect students with the legacy of local service members.
