Good Morning! On this day in 1814, James Robertson, a pioneer and frontiersman sometimes known as the “Father of Middle Tennessee,” died after swimming through several creeks on his final mission, despite being in his 70s.

Kingsport Adds Safe Haven Baby Box

Kingsport opened its first Safe Haven Baby Box on Friday at a local fire station, becoming the 23rd such location in Tennessee.

The boxes provide a safe, anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender newborns. See photos here.

Firefighters are immediately alerted when a baby is placed inside, ensuring quick care and transfer to authorities.

The program, founded by Monica Kelsey, aims to prevent infant abandonment and connects parents to support via a 24/7 hotline.

Student Enrollment Falls Statewide

Tennessee public school enrollment has dropped by 4,000 students since 2018, leaving overall enrollment lower than it was before the pandemic.

Experts cite falling birth rates, an influx of older residents without school-age children, and parents seeking alternatives to public schools as key reasons enrollment is shrinking.

Some districts like Maryville and Oak Ridge have bucked the trend with population growth, but most—like Shelby County—have seen declines.

Fewer students mean less state funding under Tennessee’s TISA formula, potentially hitting smaller districts hardest.
