Tennessee parents are reeling after the Department of Education revoked state-funded private school scholarships due to a processing error.

The glitch affected 166 families who were told they’d received funds under the Education Freedom Act, only to be bumped back to a waitlist days later.

The $7,300 scholarships are part of a statewide push for school choice, which drew more than 33,000 applicants soon after the program launched.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway in Tennessee, peaking the night of Aug. 12 with up to 75 meteors per hour under dark skies.

This year’s show could be muted due to a bright full moon just days earlier, on Aug. 9. The best early viewing might be this Thursday, during the new moon.

State parks like Burgess Falls and Old Fort are hosting night hikes and kayak events to help Tennesseans catch the celestial fireworks before the shower wraps up on Aug. 21.

Oak Grove Farms in Gallatin says it’s the first in Tennessee to commercially grow pineapples, planting 8,000 sugarloaf varieties known for their sweet, coreless flesh.

Owners Zach and Kyndle Erhard started the tropical experiment in 2023, inspired by the fruit’s success in Hawaii.

With harvest expected in August, the farm plans to sell the pineapples at its market.

The USDA hasn’t confirmed their “first in the state” claim yet, but the Erhards say their fruit is unlike anything on grocery shelves. Follow their Instagram here.
