Article Icon 1Ex-TN House Speaker Convicted

A Nashville federal jury has convicted former Tennessee House Speaker Glen Casada and his ex-chief of staff, Cade Cothren, on corruption charges tied to a fake mailer company.

Casada was found guilty on 17 counts, while Cothren was convicted on all 19 for their roles in a scheme that funneled $52,000 in taxpayer money through a sham business called Phoenix Solutions.

The pair used aliases and false paperwork to mask their involvement, with Casada’s girlfriend even posing as a fake employee; the plot unraveled after former Rep. Robin Smith pleaded guilty and cooperated with federal investigators.

Sentencing is set for September, with both men facing up to 20 years behind bars.

Article Icon 1TN AG Pushes Back on AI Regulation Ban

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is spearheading opposition to a federal amendment that would block states from regulating artificial intelligence.

Skrmetti joined 36 other attorneys general in a letter urging Congress to reject a federal budget amendment that includes a 10-year ban on state-level AI regulation.

The group warns the ban would erase protections in hundreds of current and pending state laws and leave Americans vulnerable to unchecked Big Tech practices.

Skrmetti argued that states have played a vital role in defending consumer rights and privacy, calling the proposal a “guarantee” of future harm.

The University of Tennessee College of Law is now the Frank Winston College of Law, following a record $32.5 million donation from the Bill Gatton Foundation.

The renaming honors Winston, a UT alum, veteran, former state representative, and close advisor to the late philanthropist Bill Gatton.

The gift will fund full-ride fellowships for students focused on public interest and business law, along with smaller annual grants for at least 50 students per class.

University officials said the donation cements a legacy of service and mentorship, launching a new era for legal education in Knoxville.
