Article Icon 1TN AG Sues Over Hispanic College Grant

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education, claiming one of its federal grant programs is discriminatory.

The suit targets the Hispanic Serving Institution program, which funds schools where at least 25% of the student body is Hispanic. Skrmetti argues this excludes schools like the University of Memphis—61% minority but not majority Hispanic—calling it unconstitutional and unfair.

The state is seeking to block the program’s ethnic enrollment requirement entirely.

Article Icon 1Saharan Dust Blankets Middle TN Skies

Hazy skies and vivid sunsets in Middle Tennessee this week are thanks to a plume of Saharan dust drifting across the Atlantic.

The dust, combined with lingering Canadian wildfire smoke, is coloring the skies while also stifling tropical storm formation by drying out the atmosphere.

According to the National Hurricane Center, no storms are expected in the Atlantic for now, though forecasters still predict an active hurricane season.

The dust is expected to linger, keeping skies murky but storm activity low—at least for the moment.

Captain, an Anderson County shelter dog, is ready for adoption after undergoing training with a local sheriff’s deputy.

James Presson, a K-9 officer and dog trainer, has worked with the lab-shepherd mix once considered too unruly to place in a home, teaching the pup basic obedience skills.

Presson volunteers his off-duty time to help shelter dogs like Captain become more adoptable and plans to continue the effort.

A public meet-and-greet for Captain is set for Wednesday at the Anderson County Animal Shelter.
